Race riots in US cause 85 deaths
June 1, 1921
More than 85 people have been killed and hundreds injured in race riots in Tulsa, Oklahoma, during the past 24 hours. One of the most disastrous race wars ever staged in America, the fighting was brought under control late tonight by state guardsman patrolling the streets with fixed bayonets. Thirty densely populated blocks in the Negro section of the city were burnt down.
The rioting began yesterday after a Negro bootblack was arrested on a charge of attacking a white woman, an elevator operator. When rumours circulated that the Negro was going to be lynched, 500 coloured men, heavily armed, gathered outside the court-house.
