Ottoman Sultan is out, Empire Kaput
November 4, 1922
Six thousand years of Ottoman rule in Turkey have come to an end and Sultan Mohammed VI has been ousted by the Grand National Assembly at Angora. By decree, the Republican Assembly declared that the Sultanate had "through corrupt ignorance for several centuries provoked numerous ills for the country, and now has passed into history".
The Assembly will run the country, its deputies having voted unanimously to proclaim a "government of the people and the peasants", The Sultan is expected to resign despite his protestations that the Angora Government had acted illegally in removing him from the throne.
